About David Meikle

A Leading Thinker and Innovator

David combines unparalleled experience and expertise with an ambition to transform businesses and business relationships.

David is the founder of the How to Buy a Gorilla Company marketing consultancy and the author of two books – the best-selling How to Buy a Gorilla (2017) and Tuning Up (2023).

For over a decade, David held senior positions at Grey Advertising and Ogilvy & Mather in London. Often referred to as a “trouble-shooter” and “problem-solver”, he worked on agencies’ most demanding and challenging pieces of business.  During the early 2000’s BRIC boom, David was appointed Head of Country for Ogilvy Russia, where he achieved more than a 500% revenue growth in just four years.

In 2009 David started his marketing consultancy, later named The HTBAG Company, after his first book. For more than 14 years, he has been advising clients both in the UK and globally, helping them find the right agencies, improving client-agency relationships, and designing internal and external processes and ways of working.

HTBAG’s brand-side clients include: Freemans, Direct Line Group, TSB, Bayer, Vision Express, Greater Anglia, Post Office, Experian, European Commission, and Abellio.

Agency clients include: AMV/BBDO, TBWA Asia Pacific, Adam&EveDDB, Hearts & Science, Ogilvy, MullenLowe, McCann, Recipe, the7stars, JAA, Recipe, Bubka, The Gate, and trade bodies including the IPA, ISBA, IAPI, MRS, the ICA, and the EACA.

David’s Tuning Up proprietary model, the Meikle Matrix, now features in his seminars, training programmes, and workshops for both agencies and marketing companies. It has been developed into a SaaS diagnostic tool that assesses organisational health across sectors.  This innovation has sparked interest from various UK academic institutions considering long-term studies of its impact.
